Alan Mahood: From Kilmarnock supporter to Kilmarnock player

What does Kilmarnock Football Club mean to you?

“I’m Ayrshire born and bred and was taken to Killie games from the age of four. I’ve been a supporter a long time and always will be. Kilmarnock is my club and I always want the best for the club.”

What are your favourite memories following Kilmarnock as a fan?

“When my dad took me as a youngster, Rugby Park wasn’t exactly jam-packed. I remember watching games while lying on top of the old concrete dugouts with my cousin Ali and buying sweets from the guys who used to walk around the track during the games. Great days.”

You played for Kilmarnock from 1998 to 2004. Who were the big characters at the club during your time there?

“Everybody likes to talk about Ally McCoist and Ian Durrant who were great players and big characters to have in the dressing room.

“However, during my time at the club, we had many seasoned professionals such as Gordon Marshall, Gus McPherson, Kevin McGowan, Pat Nevin, and Ray Montgomerie, who were strong characters and important players for the team.”

“I could name many more, but we always had a good mix of experienced players and young talent coming through, such as Kris Boyd, who wasn’t shy about chipping in with his opinions. What a career he went on to have, and it’s no surprise to see him working as a pundit now for Sky Sports.”

What are your favourite memories from your time playing at Rugby Park?

“As someone who grew up supporting the club, it was a dream come true to have the opportunity to play for the club and for my family to see me pull on the Kilmarnock jersey at Rugby Park many times.”

“I was also fortunate enough to captain the club on a few occassions which was a real privilege.

“Although, I did not score lots of goals, I did manage to get one on last day of the season to secure a place in Europe which fans seem to remember fondly.”

Finally, Alan, what are your hopes for the season ahead under Derek McInnes?

“First and foremost, secure a top 6 finish and hopefully have a good run in a cup.

“Qualifying for Europe again would be a bonus because it is where any club in Scottish football wants to be.

“Playing in Europe is great for fans and players alike as it gives the everyone something different to look forward to. New stadiums to visit, new teams to face and new cities to explore.”
