Exclusive: David Fisher on Big Two derby victory and his start to the season

Reflecting on the recent match against Linfield, which was an impressive away victory, can you share what it felt like to be on the pitch and win such a fierce derby match?

“Last year, we did beat them 4-0, but we also lost quite a few games to them. So, defeating them this time, especially at Windsor Park, made it even more special.

“Seeing the fans and the atmosphere after going a goal down made it that much sweeter. I think that’s what elevated the win—because often when we concede first, people tend to write us off and assume we’re done.

“It was great to show that we can now turn games around, especially in such a high-stakes match. It’s definitely a moment that will be remembered for a long time.”

In terms of yourself and your personal start to the season, how do you reflect on it so far?

“I’m relatively happy with my start to the season but like any striker, I am hungry to add more goals to my game.

“When I look at my overall game, especially in terms of stats, I’ve been focusing on tightening up a few areas. One of the big things I’ve worked on is being more precise with the ball. I realised my pass accuracy wasn’t the best, and the boys gave me a bit of stick for it, so cleaning that up and improving my aerial duels has been a key focus this season. My all-around game has definitely improved, but as you mentioned, it’s ultimately about getting the ball in the back of the net.

“I’ve scored three goals so far, and of course, I want more. But I’m not concerned. I know that as long as I keep doing the right things, the goals will come. It’s also about adapting to a few new players and understanding how they play.

“With Daire O’Connor last season, he was always about getting the ball into the box from any position, so I knew it would come in quickly whereas our build-up is a little bit more patient now, though.

“As time goes on, I am sure that we will get more deliveries into the box to create more chances, but we’re still learning each other’s style of play. So, as I said, I’m not worried—I know the goals will come.”

What’s it been like working with the new coaching staff with Declan Devine as manager, and Paddy McCourt and Tim McCann as assistants, now that they’ve been with the club for a while?

“Yeah, I’m really enjoying working with the entire coaching staff. I’ve especially appreciated working with Paddy. He’s been a great help to me. After most games, we have a quick chat to go over specific areas I can improve on.

“Recently, for example, he’s been helping me anticipate flick-ons better, like when Jay goes up for headers, so I can time my runs in behind more effectively. It’s those small adjustments he’s focused on that have been really beneficial. And of course, coming from someone with his reputation and experience, it’s been invaluable.”

A final question for you—your unique style of wearing your shorts is often a talking point among fans. Is that just a comfort thing for you, or do you enjoy standing out with it?

“I’ve always worn my shorts high during training, but I hadn’t really done it in games until this season. I started wearing them that way in pre-season, scored a goal, and decided to stick with it.

“Naturally, the comments started pouring in, and it’s been amusing to see everyone’s reactions. I also think it adds a bit of flair—after all, it would be pretty dull if we all looked the same. So, in a way, I’m just trying to bring a little something different to the pitch.”
