Dennis Bergkamp: I’d be open to future coaching role

Former Arsenal striker Dennis Bergkamp has stated that he would be open to taking up a coaching role in the future if the opportunity were to present itself.

When asked at the Football Writers’ Association Tribute Night at the Landmark in London if a return to Arsenal in a coaching capacity would interest him, Bergkamp said: “I’m at the stage of my life now where I’ve got a bit more freedom with my time – the kids are all grown up now! If something interesting to me were to come along, then I’m sure I’d like to do something like that.

“I really hope Arsenal can win a trophy this season. They’ve been so close for the past few years now, so hopefully the team can find something extra in the next few months to get them over the line. It feels like they’re in a stable position at the moment and hopefully the players can make something out of it. If Mikel Arteta can get a bit more quality and belief from the squad, then who knows what might happen!”

Argentina goal my best ever

Bergkamp was asked which of his two iconic strikes against Newcastle in the Premier League and Argentina in the 1998 World Cup he preferred, with the Dutchman picking the latter as his all-time favourite.

“Both of them were good goals, but I think the one in the World Cup against Argentina in 1998 stands out for me,” he said. “Not only was it scored at the highest level of football, but technically – the control of the ball and the finish – it’s something that I’d tried to learn how to do throughout my career. It’s really satisfying being able to pull of things that go through your mind – it was a reaction to not so much of a good ball!”

Denis Law a great

Bergkamp also touched upon former Manchester United striker Denis Law’s passing on Friday, saying his dad “got it right” in naming him after the Scot.

“I’ve heard stories about Denis Law and he comes across as a great character and a great person. He was a superb player, so I think my dad got it right to name me after him!”
