Kyogo Departs Celtic as a Modern Day Legend

Kyogo Furuhashi’s time with Celtic, beginning in 2021, has been marked by remarkable achievements and a profound impact on the club’s success.

As he has now sealed a move to Ligue 1 side Rennes in a £10 million transfer, it seems fitting to reflect on his contributions to Celtic and the legacy he leaves behind.

Joining Celtic in July 2021 from Vissel Kobe, Kyogo quickly endeared himself to fans with his dynamic play and goal-scoring prowess. He netted a hat-trick in his first Scottish Premiership home game against Dundee, signaling the start of a prolific period.

His most notable early contribution came in December 2021, when he scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over Hibernian to secure the Scottish League Cup for Celtic.

Since then and throughout his time at Celtic, overall, the Japanese striker has consistently delivered in crucial moments. In the 2022–23 season, he scored a hat-trick in a 9-0 win against Dundee United and netted pivotal goals in matches against Rangers throughout his time in the Hoops.

His ability to perform in high-stakes matches endeared him to supporters and solidified his reputation as an extremely reliable forward.

His exceptional performances have not went unnoticed. He clinched the Scottish Premiership Golden Boot in the 2022–23 season, scoring 27 league goals, and was honoured as the league’s Player of the Year. Such personal accolades underscore his significant contribution to Celtic’s domestic dominance during his tenure.

During his time in Scotland, he made 165 appearances, scoring 85 goals as Celtic won eight domestic honours – under the management of Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers – including a domestic treble in 2022/23.

As Kyogo embarks on a new chapter with Rennes, his legacy at Celtic is firmly established.

He leaves as a fan favourite and modern day icon of the club, having played a pivotal role in delivering multiple trophy-winning campaigns and memorable performances on both domestic and European stages including the Parkhead club reaching the knockout phase of the Champions League for the first time since 2013.

His professionalism, work ethic, and goalscoring proficiency on the pitch have set a standard for future signings especially whoever is brought in to replace him.

As he transitions to Ligue 1, both the player and the club can reflect on a mutually beneficial and successful partnership.
