Petr Čech Backs Arsenal for Premier League Glory but Warns Chelsea Face a Benchmarking Season

Former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Čech believes his two former clubs are heading in very different directions this season.

In an exclusive interview with Flashscore, the legendary Czech shot-stopper backed Arsenal as strong favourites to win the Premier League, while insisting Chelsea must prove their worth in what he called a “real benchmark” campaign.

Čech, who spent four seasons at the Emirates after more than a decade at Stamford Bridge, said he believes Arsenal are finally ready to go all the way. “Arsenal have a really huge chance this year,” he told Flashscore. “All their rivals are having ups and downs in form, while the Gunners are managing to win even the tough games and have built a lead.”

He praised Mikel Arteta’s side for their consistency and mental strength, adding that their experience in the Champions League could also play a key role in maintaining momentum. “Their Champions League campaign could also give them a boost,” he said. “The squad has been together for quite a while, they’ve got quality on the bench, too. So I think they have a big chance to finally go all the way this time.”

Turning his attention to Chelsea, Čech struck a more cautious tone. The former Blues keeper acknowledged the significance of the club’s recent Club World Cup triumph in the United States but said the Premier League remains the true test of progress. “I think it’s even more important now for Chelsea to prove themselves this season,” he said. “They need to compete for the title, they need to win trophies. So I’m really curious to see how they’ll handle the pressure and the high expectations.”

Čech emphasised that this campaign will serve as a genuine measure of Chelsea’s direction under their current management, describing it as “the real benchmark” for the club’s development after a period of major change.

The 43-year-old, who remains one of the most respected figures in English football, clearly retains affection for both of his former clubs.

Yet his assessment reflects two contrasting realities: Arsenal appear settled, confident, and capable of sustaining a title challenge, while Chelsea are still trying to rediscover consistency and identity after a turbulent spell.

For Arsenal supporters, Čech’s comments will only fuel optimism that this could be the year they finally lift the Premier League trophy again.

While, Chelsea, his words serve as both encouragement and warning as success at the highest level requires not just talent but resilience, stability, and the ability to thrive under pressure.
