Caroline Weir has been named the Albert Bartlett Scottish Football Writers’ Association Women’s International Player of the Year, adding another milestone to what has already been a standout season for both club and country.
The Real Madrid midfielder claims the honour for a third time after an exceptional year in which she has continued to cement her place among Scotland’s greatest modern players. Weir beat strong competition from Erin Cuthbert, Jenna Clark and Rachel McLauchlan to secure the award.
Her impact at club level has been equally impressive. During the past year, Weir became Real Madrid Femenino’s all-time leading goalscorer and also made history as the first Scottish player to receive a nomination for the Ballon d’Or Féminin.
For Scotland, the 30-year-old has led from the front since being appointed captain by head coach Melissa Andreatta. Under her leadership, Scotland currently sit top of their World Cup qualifying Group B4 after an unbeaten start.
Weir scored her first international hat-trick in a commanding 5-0 away victory over Luxembourg before helping Scotland better that result with a 7-0 win in the return fixture at Hampden Park. Two draws against Belgium earlier this month ensured Scotland remained top of the standings.
Now on 118 international caps, Weir spoke of her pride at representing her country and captaining the national side.
She said being named captain was a proud moment for both herself and her family, while stressing the importance of Scotland making a strong start to their World Cup qualifying campaign.
Weir also admitted Scotland’s men’s national team qualification success has provided extra motivation for the women’s squad, who are determined to reach the tournament themselves.
“We all want to be there,” she said. “I believe we have enough to get there, but we need to make it count when it matters.”
Speaking after receiving the honour, Weir described the award as “an honour.”
The prize will be formally presented at the Scottish Football Writers’ Association’s 60th annual dinner at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel on May 17.
For Weir, it is another deserved recognition in a career that continues to reach new heights. With Scotland dreaming of World Cup qualification and their captain in inspired form, the coming months could bring even more history.
